Edvard Aviles-Meza

I am an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. I received my PhD in Philosophy, with a concentration in Cognitive Science, from Cornell University.

Before that, I earned a BA in Psychology and completed two master’s degrees: one in Neuroscience at the National University of San Marcos’s School of Medicine and another in Philosophy at Central European University (CEU).

My work lies primarily in the philosophy of mind and epistemology, approached through the lens of cognitive science. I’m interested in foundational issues concerning the mind and cognition, such as the nature of consciousness and mental representation, as well as their epistemological significance. More recently, I’ve been working on the topic of human intelligence. I also have interests in aesthetics and South Asian (Buddhist) philosophy.

Outside philosophy, I enjoy playing and composing music, as well as filmmaking—interests I try to bring together through documentary work. I also love training mixed martial arts (MMA), especially striking.

I was born and raised in Lima, Perú.
